Vietnam War Propaganda

Bandwagon

This poster employs the bandwagon technique using generalizing words to deliver the message that if you are an American, then by default you must want peace, and must therefore be against the war in Vietnam.

The poster consists of the statement “Americans want peace” coupled with symbols commonly associated with being American: an eagle, stars, the color blue, olive branches, and a shield designed to resemble the American flag. These symbols are placed strategically to make the viewer (presumably American) to feel patriotism and feel united as a nation. The message then states that if you are an American, then you must be against the war in Vietnam. This statement, which generalizes that all Americans must feel a certain way, is a clear usage of bandwagon. If the viewer is swayed by the patriotic message, then they would be against the war and for peace.
