Plain Folks

This poster uses the plain folk technique by graphic imagery and situational words to show that the Vietnam war is an effort not against communism, but against humanity alike and therefore the war is immoral.

The poster displays the wounded face of a Vietnamese child surrounded with the words “know your enemy.” What this poster is trying to tell the viewer is that the targets of the war that the Americans are fighting against are often not a communism-crazed inhuman entity, but innocent civilians, even little kids. Presented in such a fashion that the viewer sees that innocent little kids are getting brutally wounded as effect of the war, they are given the view that their enemies are just normal people just like them, which is a clear example of the use of the plain folk propaganda technique. Put off by the imagery and hit with the realization of what the Americans are truly fighting, viewers see the true inhumane atrocities of war, which is exactly what the author of the poster is trying to do.
